What is trace heating?
Trace heating (also referred to as electric surface heating) is the practice of applying a heat tape to a pipe or object to maintain its temperature. There are many types of heat tape, the most commonly used is referred to as self regulating. This form of trace heating cable has a polymer and carbon based element which varies its resistance depending upon the temperature. At higher temperatures, it uses less power and at lower temperatures it uses more. It also means that the cable can only reach a certain temperature by design so forms a very stable and safe part of an electric heating system. Trace heating cable selection is based on various factors, including heat loss of the object/pipe, insulation used and required maintenance temperature (ie is it for frost protection or process temperature maintenance purposes)?
